Hi all,

what are the advantages and disadvantages of Russian SMG platoons compared to "normal russian rifle" infantry? :conf:

pro:
> those SMG platoons have one more firing attack, esp. valuable with Guard units
>they are strong attackers and defenders
cons:
> limited firing range and firing attack strength
> their uniform is not so shiny??

any more arguments?

Thanks!

I believe you have pretty much listed all the pros and cons (never thought of the uniform before :chin:)

Lack of range is a disadvantage but even with regular Russian infantry one does not want to engage the Germans at a distance. I find Russian rifle fire greater than 500 meters a waste of time and positively unhealthy for my troops as the German MG's and even rifle platoons sit back at 750 meters and fire away.

The other disadvantage is the lack of firepower. I agree but keep getting surprised by the disruptions and SP losses I get at times when receiving SMG OP fire (or dealing it out).

Playing the Russian side is interesting and at the risk of over generalization the Russian infantry is more specialized (SMG, AT platoons, regular rifle) and lack the good all round abilities of Panzergrenadiers.
Some Soviet SMG platoon attacks will disrupt and/or overrun an undisrupted unit if their odds and "dice roll" are sufficient. You do not have to wait for a unit to disrupt if you have enough SMG's assaulting.
At least that is what I have seen from some players who have used that method.

cheers
On the other hand they can sometimes survive the assault even if disrupted :jaw:
I have found that the Russian SMG platoon's main value is in Assault where they have 8 or 9 points vs just 3 or 4 for Rifle Platoons.
I do not understand why SMG Platoons which started after JUne 1941 have 9 assault points and those which started after December 1941 (check the Tables) have 8 assault points. Guards SMG Platoons after December 1941 also have 8 assault points so I just assume they all have 8 points. This must be a minor glitch which I am not criticising as I have infinite respect for the job JohnTiller, Jason Petho and others have done in devising this superb game engine.
In my view, after several glasses of wine, they are near useless.
Tney inspire so much hope, what with their " fire" assault badge and high assault value, but have no shooting effect whatsoever, and do no better than normal rifle infantry in assault.
So, cant shoot, no real benefit in assault and no benefit in defense,

I cannot work them out, and would rather have rifle troops any day, and lets face it, they are pretty useless too, but occasionally can score a disrupt on german infantry.

SMG troops should surely be awesome at close range, but to me, they are really a liability.

No doubt my incompetence........:conf:

[Deleted my comments as I misread Cole's post]
I think they suck
I don't play EF now, but I recall their great value was in the Assault
Hello All,

I love SMG platoons. You just got to know how to use them.

There are three types as follows:

2FP (Soft) 0 FP (Hard) Assault 8

These guys are good only for scouting, surrounding and assaulting.

4 FP, 2FP (Soft) 3 FP (Hard) Assault 9

These guys can get results on soft targets not in cover and you can get them behind light armor and they will casuse damage! Of course they assault.

The last and best type is:

6FP, 3FP, 1FP (Soft) 3 FP (Hard) Assault 9

These guys kick a$$. They can damage soft targets quite well, mess up armor from behind and assault.

Thanx!
