i couldnt find exact answer from manual, but
can a unit become low ammo in a turn when it has fired a defensive shot during opponent turn ? (not during previous turn from his side)
My understanding is that any unit that fires is a candidate for low ammo at the start of your next turn. So I think the answer to your question is yes.

It would be nice to have a unit-by-unit option of "no fire" where the unit will not DF (expect perhaps in the case of assault).
