More then one variable. Terrain and visibility range matters also. Unit count might be a better metric then points. There has to be enough room to move dispersed, yet you want to fight concentrated. So that means game length is important also. I try to avoid maps smaller then 100 x 100 because arty can dominate a smaller map regardless of what percentage is used.
I try to make the points great enough to buy formations that match the map size. Tactical training manuals give the frontage a formation should cover, but those same manuals are always being revised due to changes in equipment, tactics, etc. Plus modern Mechanized warfare isn't about 'frontage' but firepower and mobility. That throws off the manuals in the real world and doesn't help much in the SP world either .
I would say experience will help you decide what is best for you, except that might not be what is best for someone else.
The Player with the most ladder games likes HUGE battles. I'm playing 3 games against Jad now that have 20,000 points per side on 120 x 120 maps. Unit density has morphed into burning wreck density. One battle is set in '47 and I have a regiment of Panthers and Pattons. That was 130 some tanks when we started. Units were pretty cheap back in that period and 20K will buy a LOT of everything.
Now that just sounds "gamey" . Like someone who sets up a game with limited depth, long duration and a 10% arty cap to support his "Infantry" agenda. Just some of the variables to winning the battle before it starts. Yes, I'm talking about all you Shark2Shark out there. Why not just go with the maximum size of map and cluster the OBJs on logical locations?
Or go with a standard sized 120x120 map? Or you could use the 3-5km(60-100hexes) of front/Battalion formula. Or have someone else set the game upBig Grin

Like Uncle Joe said; "Quanity has a quality of it's own".
Jad, I'll start getting turns back pretty soon now. The great house makeover is done so far as contractors go. What's left I'll do myself, pretty much at my own pace. I'm still waiting for my computer desk to arrive. I set up my gear on an old card table. It's a little shaky, but I think it will work. At least for now. I'm going over to get my turns now.
Take your time grumbler.......I have a new policy......no time limits on turns..........with as busy as I have been lately I have no right to demand anyone else to speed up their lives for me. Send them when you get a chance, I always enjoy our games.

Right up there with killing baby seals, isn't it?

If you're talking about flipping them in the air before eating them....
