At the moment I'm playing a campaign game of SPWaW version 8.4 I'm playing the Germans at Kursk in 1943. It's just that the the Russians really greatly outnumber the German side in everything including the tanks. The visibility range for the game is very low about 6 hexes, so the long range firepower of the German tanks is out of the question
Thinking I would use some good tactics here I thought it might be a good idea to fight a delaying action with infantry and tanks. The idea was as their tanks came into view I would fire a couple of rounds and then reverse out of sight and wait for them to appear again. The same with my infantry mixed amongst the tanks and of course putting down an artillery barrage as we retreated. The mission was a delaying action as assigned by the computer.
Imagine my horror as after firing off a shot or two, when trying to retire my tanks turned around first before moving and showed their rear to the enemy.
They became such easy prey for the AI they were shot up so easily they might just as well have stayed there and tried to slug it out before first being shot to pieces.
The Question I have is there anyway I've missed in the manual where you can reverse tanks and vehicles as opposed to the turning around in this fashion. I would appreciate any help on the matter, although it might be too late for this particular campaign as I'm going down real fast.

Cheers,
Gordon
Not in SPWAW. In WinSPWW2 and WinSPMBT you can.
U press 8 and if they have enough movement points left they will reverse. As stated, only in the Windows versions of the game.
Thanks Guys
I guess I'm going to have to put up with it then and find some new tactics or something. I know I'll run away when the visibility is so low.
There are so many different versions of this game it's all very confusing. I see something now about enhanced versions, I've had a look at the website but not sure which versions are the best.
Cheers,
Gordon
The Enhanced Mod is a club effort to correct errors in the OOBs and offer better graphics. It uses a modified 8.403 exe for better gameplay.
Your opinion may vary.

The nice thing is that you use ModSwap to install and uninstall the mod so you can keep your 8.4

Two versions are offered, one with native language names for units and one with the original English names.
The only way to get around it in the non windows versions is to ensure your tanks are directly behind a crest. Then during your turn you pop up, shoot, and move back down again all in the same turn. This way they won't get a shot at your ass.

Also, don't just pop one up, shoot with him, and then move him back and go to the next. Move up a bunch of tanks and alternate your firing. Fire with tank A, then B then C and then back to A. This will prevent the target from returning fire and gaining an accuracy bonus. By alternating fire the target will always be traversing and thus not locking on.

And lastly, make sure you watch the MOVEMENT AREA carefully. You want to make sure that the hex behind your tank is always lit as a movement possible hex. If it goes dark then your tank is stuck on the hill. Your only option then is to pop smoke (D) or fire smoke rounds if you have them (X).
Thanks everyone I will see if I can install the enhanced version.
I was also trying the reversed slope type defence but was being overwhelmed by the massed Russians in this instance. I was unaware of the tactic of popping up more than one tank at once and alternate firing of them could make a difference. I will try this as soon as possible and also keep that eye on the darkened movement hexes. I am pretty new to these SP games having at some time or other tried most of the others, I find these great.
One day I might even get a little better at them. lol
Thanks again,
Gordon
