Full Version: A quick question about Artillery Commanders

Hi folks, do commanders of artillery batteries have any effect on indirect fire results if stacked with a battery. I have a feeling that they do not but I can't remember. If so the commander and HQ may just be removed from the map as they have no part to play?

Chris
Hi Chris,

I think you are right. As far as I know, the commander has no influence on the effect of the indirect fire. And unlikely other units, the Arty HQ has no influence on the ammo supply of the batteries. So both, the commander and the HQ, are only potentional canon fodder?

The commander gives the arty HQ additional command range I believe.

Leto
It does but the HQ plays no part in artillery supply as artillery gets it's supply from the pool. I assume artillery is defined as any unit capable of indirect fire?

Chris
I always remove the arty HQs from the map. No sense in potentially giving your opponent major points for units that don't actually do anything.
Good question Chris.

I don't know with regard to effect of leaders on those units. :conf:

"A leader in the same hex as a firing unit that is subordinate to him will automatically modify the Attack Strength of that attacking unit equal to his command rating."

it's in the book! ;)
Doesn't work with indirect fire. Sometimes artillery units come with an AA gun or somefink....if so you can pair the leader up with that and send it off to the front.
Yes, Ivan, I was referring to direct fire by the artillery [I should have been clearer :(]. It turns a 25 pdr at medium range into a desert tank killer. If you are desperate, as I often am! LOL! ;)
An artillery HQ with a leader provides covering force for any roaming units behind the lines. A regimental leader with a leader of 2 or 3 is an effective tank killer, especially early in the war.

Of course, there are limitations. A last resort is better than no resort.

Furthermore, the artilley HQ provides supply to any attached security units.

Take care and good luck
