Note: This scenario is preferably to be played by humans on both sides, but
also playing with Germans on the human side and the British as AI is
possible. Leave command & control turned off, then working with paratroopers
goes more realistically.
*
*
In this hypothetical scenario the Germans have launched a massive
counterattack against the British lines due to unsuccessful British assault
at El-Alamayn. Most of the British 8th army suffered then from a severe
diarrhoea epidemic with flatulence, and Monty was forced to call off the
assault. At the same time, general Erwin Rommel finally convinced Hitler of
his urgent need for serious reinforcements. As a result, tanks started
flowing to Afrika Korps, and only after three weeks of battle, Rommel had
already reached Alexandria, Egypt, and prepared to go across the river Nile.
*
*
Colonel Funck, the western side of the river is heavily defended. The
crucial bridge westernmost on the Nile delta must be taken in order to
continue our advance. The moment is especially beneficial for us now since
the British lines are in disorder, and therefore we must quickly take
advantage of it.
*
*
Colonel, the mission for Your men is very demanding. Our reconnaissance
planes have spotted at least two heavy AA-batteries around the bridge, and
they must be taken out before the actual landing on the bridge can take
place. The bridge is to be taken by an airdrop by paratroopers, and the
minefield on the road in front of the bridge is to be cleared by specially
trained engineers in order to enable our advancing panzers to come across.
*
*
Your orders are simple. In the first wave of attack paratroopers are dropped
around the bridge to search and destroy the AA-batteries. At the same time
engineers are dropped in front of the bridge to clear the mines on the road.
Around 20 minutes after this the second wave of the paratroopers from island
of Crete are dropped near the bridge, I expect those batteries to have been
destroyed this far or at least to be engaged in battle so that they cannot
efficiently fire our planes. The paratroopers clear the enemy around the
bridge and hold it INTACT as long as our wedge of armor reaches it.
*
*
We can expect fierce resistance from the garrison near the bridge, possibly
some tanks, but the paratroopers MUST be able to hold on to it. Their
mission is the hardest, because their success not only depends on the
arrival of the panzers, but also on the engineers` ability to clear that
minefield fast. You must emphasize Your men that even though they will be
put in difficult situation, help WILL be coming in form of panzers
approximately 40 minutes after the first wave. In this mission night is our
friend, darkness will provide cover especially for our first wave of
paratroopers. This time, unfortunately, you must do this without support
from the artillery, ammunition of wrong caliber was delivered to our
batteries. The officer responsible for this is already on his way to the
eastern front. Hence the mortars that will be dropped with the paratroopers
are all you will have.
*
*
I know I can count on You on this mission colonel. Our best men are standing
behind You, use them wisely. And remember, the Fuehrer is watching You!
