NVA Assault on A101 SF Basecamp at Lang Vei*
Southwest of Khe Shan*
*
As a apparent prelude to the attack on Khe Shan Marine Firebase the NVA 66 Regiment and a company of PT 76 amphibious tanks attack the Special Forces basecamp at Lang Vei. Prior to the attack proper the NVA had routed a Loatian Battalion stationed nearby just across the border in Laos which fled to Lang Vei and brought warning of the NVA presence in the area. The fact that tanks were mentioned was a cause of great concern for the defenders at Lang Vei. The Laotian Battalion was allowed to assume defensive positions in the old Lang Vei basecamp situated near Lang Vei 2 Basecamp however the Laotian Battalion commander would not take orders from the A101 SF detachment commander as he was of lower rank. A SF Lt Colonel was dispatched to the camp to smooth out the difficultys in this incident and place a ranking US officer there to enable that a US chain of command over this unit was maintained however the Laotians refused to come the Lang Vei SF basecamps aid when the NVA attack commenced insisting that they would not move until daybreak. The battle at Lang Vei commenced in darkness and continued until the early morning hours of the 8th of Feburary. The Laotian Battalion are therefore not included in the scenario. The NVA quickly breached the wire barrier of the camp and began assaulting the sections of the camp in detail in a coordinated infantry/tank assault. They suceeded in overrunning the camp in large part and destroyed in essence the defenders based there. Marine reaction forces stationed nearby at Khe Shan were not commited to the camps relief as the Marine firebase was itself in threat of large NVA forces massed nearby. A Special Forces relief force scraped up was dispatched to extract the survivors on the 8th.*
